Fireworks can be a significant source of stress and anxiety for many dogs, especially small breeds like Dachshunds who are more sensitive to higher frequency sounds. Here are some of our top tips to help alleviate your dog’s stress during fireworks season:
-
-
Create a Safe Space:
Designate a quiet, safe, and comfortable area in your home where your dog can retreat to when fireworks are going off. This could be a quiet room or a crate if your dog is crate-trained.
-
Provide Distractions:
Give your dog some toys or natural treats to keep them occupied. Crinkly or squeaky toys are our most popular take a look in our FUN STUFF section or our long-lasting chews like Pizzle sticks or Yak Yak Yak chews are helpful in diverting their attention from the noise.

-
Calming Music or White Noise:
Play calming music or white noise in the background to help drown out the sound of fireworks. There are even specially designed playlists and CDs for dogs available.
-
Use Calming Products:
Consider using anxiety-reducing products such as CALM organic Hemp oil or our SWEET DREAMS Lavender & Camomile calming treats. These can help relax your dog during stressful times.

-
Desensitization:
Prior to fireworks season, consider desensitizing your dog to loud noises. There are recordings and apps available that can help you gradually expose your dog to firework sounds at a low volume, increasing it over time to help them become less sensitive.
-
Consult a veterinarian:
If your dog’s anxiety is severe, consult your veterinarian. They may recommend medication or other treatments to help your dog cope with the stress. Do not administer any medication without your vet’s guidance.
-
Stay Calm:
Your dog can pick up on your emotions, so it’s important to remain calm and composed during fireworks. Reassure your dog with a soothing tone of voice but avoid excessive cuddling, which might reinforce their fear.
-
Keep Your Dog Indoors:
Always keep your dog indoors during fireworks displays. Do not take them to fireworks events or let them off-leash outside.
-
Update Identification:
Ensure your dog has proper identification, such as a collar with an updated tag and a microchip, in case they escape due to fear during fireworks.
-
Avoid Punishment:
Never punish your dog for displaying fear or anxiety during fireworks. This will only make the situation worse.
-
Exercise Earlier in the Day
Give your dog a good workout earlier in the day so they are tired and less anxious when the fireworks start in the evening.

-
Plan Potty Breaks:
Take your dog outside to relieve themselves before the fireworks begin. Be cautious and keep them on a leash or in a securely fenced area.
-
Remember that every dog is unique, and what works best may vary from one dog to another. It’s important to be patient and understanding with your dog during fireworks season, and if necessary, consult a professional dog trainer or behaviourist for additional guidance.
